A study published in theJournal of Sexual Medicinehas shown that the anti-impotence drug Viagra could lead to long-term sexual activity in some patients who took the drug. The drug was approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation in 1998, but the effects were not long-term enough to allow its use in men with sexual dysfunction. In fact, Viagra, sold as Cialis by Pfizer, is now considered one of the most popular erectile dysfunction treatments.
The study, which was funded by the US government, found that Viagra users had a significant increase in their ability to perform sexually, compared with the control group. Those who took Viagra had an average of 4.4 hours of sexual activity per week, compared with 4.7 hours in the group who took Cialis. Those who took the drug had no sexual response or sexual distress.
The study, which was published inThe Journal of Sexual Medicine, also found that men who took Viagra had an average of 4.4 hours of sexual activity per week, compared to 3.8 hours in the group who did not take the drug. These results are the first published in a peer-reviewed journal to show that the drug could have long-term benefits for erectile dysfunction patients.
Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer, has been prescribed to millions of men around the world for ED since 1998. As of April 2011, Viagra had sales of $1.7 billion and had sales of $1 billion in the U.
